Having a Baby or Adopting a Child

Adoption or pregnancy can affect your benefits options. The following checklist can help you to plan for these events.

If employee is the birth mother, review the Short Term Disability Plan. You may not be prepared for possible payroll adjustments. Benefits guide
Consider enrolling child in medical, dental and vision within 30 days of birth or adoption. You will not be allowed to enroll the child until the next Annual open enrollment period. Call Human Resources Benefits guide – Medical, Dental and Vision
Consider enrolling child in dependent child life insurance within 30 days of birth or adoption. If you want to add your child after the 30-day period elapses, you will be required to provide statement of health. Call Human Resources

Check your available vacation and speak with your immediate supervisor about scheduling around the birth or adoption of your child. Your supervisor and co-workers may not be prepared for your absence. Your supervisor
You may be eligible for a Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or other leave of absence. Discuss with your immediate supervisor as soon as possible. If you don’t, you may not be eligible later. FMLA must be completed within the first 12 months of the child’s arrival. You Supervisor
Consider enrolling in or increasing your election for the Health Care and Dependent Care Spending Accounts within 30 days of the birth or adoption. If you do not complete within 30 days of the change in family status, you will not be allowed to make changes until the next annual open enrollment period. Call Human Resources

Consider enrolling in or increasing your optional life insurance level. Call Human Resources to get a statement of health form. You existing coverage will remain in place. However, you may enroll or increase your coverage if you provide a statement of health. Call Human Resources

Review your beneficiaries for Basic Life AD&D, Optional Life and 401(k), Your existing beneficiary elections will remain in place. Call Human Resources

Update your records with Human Resources. This includes tax withholding and Social Security. Your information will not be correct. Call Human Resources
Speak with your lawyer to update your will, beneficiary designations and guardianship agreements. Your legal documents will not reflect your child. Contact your lawyer directly
